Reddit videos, finally in text
Reddit is full of video that never makes it to YouTube: clips from local news in r/news and city subreddits, explainers in r/videos, tutorials in hobby communities, game footage, pet clips, dashcam videos and first-person accounts of events as they happen. The discussion in the comments is often as valuable as the video itself, and both are easier to work with as text.
When Reddit hosts a video (the v.redd.it player), it can attach a WebVTT caption file to it. PullSubtitle finds that caption file for the post you paste, cleans it up and gives you the transcript in two forms: a timestamped list of lines and a single block of plain text. Reddit's auto-captions often repeat the same words across overlapping cues as they "roll" on screen; we merge those duplicates so the transcript reads naturally.
Next to the transcript you'll see the post title, the author, the subreddit and when it was posted. Paid plans add upvotes, the upvote ratio and the comment count, and Pro can export up to a hundred comments from the thread.
How to get a transcript from a Reddit video
- Open the post with the video on reddit.com or in the Reddit app.
- Tap Share and then Copy link, or copy the URL from your browser.
- Paste it into the box at the top of this page.
- Optional: choose a caption language if the video has more than English.
- Press Get transcript.
- Copy the text or pick an export format.
Supported links include reddit.com/r/[subreddit]/comments/[id]/..., old.reddit.com links, shortened redd.it links and direct v.redd.it video links. The post must be in a public subreddit.
Video hosted somewhere else?
Many Reddit posts link to videos on YouTube, TikTok or X rather than uploading to Reddit. In that case, open the video's original link and use the matching PullSubtitle tool: YouTube, TikTok or X.
What Reddit transcripts are useful for
Research and social listening
Researchers and brand teams track how people talk about products, places and events on Reddit. A transcript lets you code what's said in videos the same way you code text posts, and the CSV export keeps timestamps attached.
Quoting viral clips
When a Reddit video takes off, news writers and newsletter authors need the exact words. A transcript is quicker and more reliable than replaying the clip ten times.
Subtitles for reposting your own content
If you uploaded a video to Reddit and want to post it elsewhere, download SRT or VTT and you have ready-made subtitles.
Moderation and community records
Moderators sometimes need a record of what a removed or reported video said. Exporting the transcript with the post metadata creates a clear, timestamped note.
Accessibility
Reddit's player doesn't always make captions obvious. A readable transcript helps users who are deaf or hard of hearing, or who browse with the sound off.
Thread details included
Each Reddit result shows the post's context:
- Every plan: post title, author, link to the author's profile, publish date, duration where available and the post's self-text if it has any.
- Paid plans: upvotes, upvote ratio, comment count and the subreddit name in the details panel.
- Pro: the Comments tab loads up to 100 comments from the thread with their scores, exportable to CSV.
This makes PullSubtitle handy for social listening: paste a list of video posts in batch mode on a paid plan, export the results, and you have the spoken content, the engagement and the community's reaction in one place.
Why some Reddit videos have no transcript
PullSubtitle relies on the caption file Reddit attaches to its own videos, and not every video has one. You may see a no-transcript message because:
- Reddit didn't generate captions for the video, which is common for very short clips, music, and videos without clear speech.
- The caption language doesn't match. Try a different language code, or leave it on English.
- The video isn't hosted on Reddit. Links out to YouTube, Streamable or other hosts need the original link instead.
- The subreddit is private or quarantined, or the post was removed.
- The post is a gallery or image, not a video.
We don't run AI transcription for Reddit videos, so an empty result is always free and never uses credits.
Exports and timestamps
Because Reddit captions include timings, every export lines up with the video:
- SRT and VTT reproduce the caption timing, cleaned of markup and duplicates.
- CSV lists each line with start and end times in both clock format and seconds.
- TXT gives you plain text, or text with [m:ss] markers when Timestamps is switched on.
- Markdown produces a document headed with the post title, author, date and link.
- JSON contains every segment and the post's metadata for scripts and analysis.
Free accounts can download TXT and SRT; Starter and Pro unlock every format.
Working through many Reddit videos
If you're researching a topic across a subreddit, looking at reactions to an event, or collecting tutorials from a hobby community, one link at a time gets tedious. Batch mode on paid plans accepts up to 10 links per run on Starter and 50 on Pro. PullSubtitle processes them in order, shows which ones returned a transcript, and lets you open each result to copy or export it.
Posts without captions are flagged and don't use credits, so it's safe to paste a long list even if you're not sure which videos are captioned. Your history keeps the successful ones for your plan's retention period, so you can come back and export them later.
Tips for better Reddit transcripts
Reddit's automatic captions are generated from the uploaded audio, so the usual rules apply: clear speech produces clean text, while loud music, crowd noise and overlapping voices produce gaps. A few tips:
- Use the original post link rather than a crosspost. Crossposts point to the same video, but the original thread usually has the most useful comments for context.
- Leave the language on English unless you know the video has captions in another language; most Reddit caption files are English.
- Turn on timestamps when you're quoting, so you can cite the exact second something was said.
- Check proper nouns. Place names, usernames and brand names are where automatic captions most often slip.
If a video you need has no Reddit captions but was originally posted on another platform, the original is often the better source anyway, with better audio and sometimes creator-uploaded captions.
Privacy
PullSubtitle doesn't need a Reddit account and never votes, comments or posts. The author isn't notified. We don't download or store the video. If you're signed in, transcripts are saved to your private history for your plan's retention period and can be deleted whenever you like.
Reddit users often share personal experiences. When quoting from a video, consider the poster's privacy, link to the original thread, and avoid republishing personal details.
